Small Changes, Big Impact: Composting at the Heart of Rural Communities

The workshop titled “Composting through Natural and Artificial Methods” was successfully held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Agios Theodoros, organized by the Laona Foundation in collaboration with the Women’s Association of Rural Larnaka. More than 40 women participated in the workshop.

The main speaker was Mr. Pantelis Sofokleous, Civil Engineer and Environmental Engineer, who presented how proper composting can be carried out using organic waste from our homes, enabling participants to apply the practice either at home or within their communities. The presentation sparked strong interest, and the women actively participated throughout the discussion on the various uses of compost.

In addition to their active participation, the attendees enthusiastically took part in an interactive game based on the knowledge they had gained. The winner of the game, Maria Miltiadous, received a composting bin as a prize. A second composting bin was raffled off and won by Mrs. Fotini Papanikolaou.

The workshop is part of the project “Women for the Green Transition,” implemented within the framework of the Grants for Change 2025 programme. The Grants for Change 2025 programme is an initiative of the ENA Foundation, aiming to empower local communities by supporting sustainable and socially innovative actions.

The project’s goal is to empower women in rural areas by providing them with knowledge and tools that will enable them to actively contribute to the green transition and to the creation of a more sustainable future for their families, their communities, and the country.
