Meeting with Environmental Organizations
On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the Laona Foundation participated in a meeting organized by AKEL with representatives of environmental organizations. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen dialogue and cooperation in addressing the critical environmental challenges facing Cyprus.
The representatives of the Laona Foundation highlighted the severity of the water issue, emphasizing the large number of private swimming pools being licensed, which result in significant waste of drinking water due to evaporation into the atmosphere and the frequent replenishment or replacement of water.
They also referred to the government’s decision to supply rural communities with shredders for fire prevention purposes, and supported the position that community groups should be assisted in utilizing the shredded material either for ground cover in agricultural areas or as green fertilizer.
Finally, the Foundation reiterated its longstanding position opposing the proposal to install a pyrolysis unit in the Limassol district, as such a facility constitutes a hazardous and unsustainable technology for Cyprus.
