The Laona Foundation, together with Friends of the Earth Cyprus and the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health, has submitted a joint letter to the President of the Republic of Cyprus and relevant national authorities expressing serious concerns regarding the proposed Food and Feed Safety Simplification Omnibus, commonly referred to as the “Pesticide Omnibus.”
The letter raises concerns over proposals currently under discussion at European level that could allow unlimited approval periods for most pesticide active substances, potentially weakening scientific reassessment processes and reducing safeguards for human health and the environment. It also highlights the need for stronger pesticide governance, improved monitoring, and the reinforcement of the precautionary principle in agricultural and public health policy.
In light of Cyprus’ important role in European decision-making, the signatory organisations call on national authorities to support reforms that address administrative delays in pesticide assessments without compromising existing levels of protection for citizens, farmers, biodiversity, and ecosystems.
