Tree-planting at Geri with 39 volunteers
The second tree-planting activity for 2026 under the European LIFE-AgrOassis project was successfully carried out! On Sunday, 25 January 2026, in the area of Geri, 39 volunteers from Cyprus Greens and Τhe paper clip project helped plant more than 170 trees. A big thank you to everyone for their valuable contribution!
The tree-planting activities are held under the auspices of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Ms Antonia Theodosiou.
LIFE-AgrOassis promotes the reintroduction of traditional hedgerows around agricultural fields using deep-rooted plants grown in special Deep Root Training Tubes at the Department of Forests, with scientific guidance from the KES Research Centre. This innovative method, tested for the first time in Europe, reduces irrigation needs and strengthens plants’ resilience to drought.
From 2023 to 2025, more than 8,000 trees and shrubs have been planted in farmland areas degraded by desertification. The project’s tree-planting activities will be completed in February 2026.
The LIFE-AgrOassis project, with partners from Cyprus, Thessaly and Crete, is co-funded by the European Union and aims to support agriculture in areas vulnerable to climate change.
Project partners include: the Ministry of Agriculture (led by the Agricultural Research Institute, with the participation of the Departments of Environment, Agriculture and Forests), the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), KES Research Center (KESRC), Cypriot Farmers Union (EKΑ), the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh), the University of Thessaly (UoTh), the Municipality of Sitia, Paradeisiotis Ltd, TOEB Tavropou, and the Laona Foundation.
