Construction of machinery for the Composting unit

The AgrOassis project aims in providing ideas and solutions for the establishment of small-scale composting plants equipped with low-cost machinery, if possible, purchased by local manufacturers.

For the operation of the pilot composting unit at ARI’s farm, project team constructed a compost turner and a rotary compost sifter.

A significant achievement of the project was that the elements of the unit were constructed by a Cypriot agricultural machinery manufacturer at a lower cost than purchasing them from the international market.

The compost turner is used to mix the material at regular intervals, to ensure proper aeration throughout its volume. It is mounted on a tractor and moves over the windrow at an adjustable speed. It features a horizontal steel drum with blades that provide homogenization and oxygenation of the material. Additionally, a water tank mounted top of the machine and a nozzle watering system can spray water during material mixing.
